At Google I/O conference 2010, Google announced its new Fonts API and online directory. The API lets webmasters to use any of the free fonts owned by Google on their websites.
And today, the repository got a new feature, the ability to preview and modify the font you’d like to use with the Google Font Preview tool.
Typography has been one of the annoying spots of web development for a lot of years ago. While the rest of the web technologies were advanced and improved, webmasters were stuck using the ordinary and standard fonts as two decades ago.
Thankfully, in recent years, things have eventually began moving forward, and webmasters could use more ‘eccentric’ fonts for their website with the assurance that most of their visitors would be able to really see them. But this leads to another problems, there are very less places where we can get access to those fonts, even paid ones.
Google’s Font Directory will not settle the matter at all, there are only 18 fonts available for now, but it’s a great step forward. All of the fonts are rolled out under an open source license and webmasters can easily get the embed code for their website.
Now, we can check out how the text on our website will exactly look like with the font we chose. More importantly, we can modify the finer aspects of the font from the preview page. We can customize things like the its size, insert shadows and transformations like Uppercase, Underline and many more. We can also set the spacing between letters, words and lines. In conclusion, there are a lot of options to gain exactly what you’re really looking for and all of this doesn’t need of fiddling with any code.
