NVIDIA Attempts Developing Real Hair

About ten years ago, Final Fantasy VII raised the bets on realistic depiction of their human characters in their cinematics. It is a good thing, too – those cinematics became a terrific gift for the hours spent obtaining EXP as well as levelling up to make one is characters coincidence enough to withstand the fights they layed in wait behind.

It was not long before the other enterprises begin to ‘level up’ their own cinematics, as well as bit time still before gamers begin to need that feeling of realism in the actual gameplay. Therefore, NVIDIA (video under) has been working on real-time rendering — really down to the last hair their can set.

According to their demonstration at the GDC, they are presently able to, in-game, rendering around 18,000 personal strands of hair at a time, really interactive with light, wind, and seemingly, conditioning — just look at that bounce as well as shine!

Given that most people head of hair has around 100,000 strands, NVIDIA has not achieve Caprica levels of in-game realism yet — however for today’s technology, we think we can settle for this outstanding leap forward.
